    Notes:

    Birth:
Some records apparently give his birth year as 1856 & 1857; however, his gravestone shows both his birth and death dates (1859-1921).

Cumberland married Caroline Lucas. [Group Sheet]

    1. Jessee L. Adkins

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Parker Adkins was born in 1763 in Franklin Co, VA (son of Jacob Adkins and Judah); died on 11 May 1857 in Raleigh Co, VA; was buried in Parker Adkins Farm Cemetery, Pluto, Raleigh Co, WV.

    Notes:

    Misc Data received long ago

    Died:
Parker Adkins' death record in a compilation of records gives his date of death as 11 May 1857. However, his military pension records show he died on 10 May 1857.

Parker married Mary Ann on 11 Mar 1851 in Raleigh Co, VA. Mary was born about 1830; died on 14 Jan 1887 in Union Dist, Lincoln Co, WV. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Mary Ann was born about 1830; died on 14 Jan 1887 in Union Dist, Lincoln Co, WV.

    Notes:

    Married:
Although Parker's military pension records gives the marriage date as 5 Mar 1851, according to their marriage record, the marriage of Parker Adkins & Mrs. Mary Ann ___ Willis took place on 11 Mar 1851 (license on 9 Jan 1851).

It is the opinion of Doug Couch, owner of this site (adkinshorton.net), that the following children were not children of Parker Adkins, even though the death record of one of them (Elizabeth) gives him as her father.
    • Sarah Adkins, born 1851
    • Elizabeth Adkins, born 1853
    • Elizabeth Adkins, born 1857 or 1858
    • Cumberland Adkins, born 1859
    Reasons:
    1. When Parker, born in 1763, married Mrs. Mary Willis in 1851, he was approximately 88 years old. It is very unlikely that he then continued to have children right up until his death in 1857.
    2. Per his gravestone, Cumberland was born approximately two years after Parker's death. Caveat: Although Cumberland's gravestone gives his birth year as 1859, he appears with his "mother", Mary, and siblings in the 1870 census as being age 14; which would place his birth year around 1856.
    3. Parker's last will and testament, issued by him and bearing his witnessed mark on May 9, 1857, included Mary, his then wife, and all his children (by Mary Lefon) as heirs, even including his granddaughter, Rebecca. However, no mention is made of these later children. If they were his children born before he died, he would have included them.
Possibility: These children were adopted and given a home and a life, but not inheritance. Such a possibility would also explain why his daughter Elizabeth, born in probably 1857, was cited as having Parker as her father. Her death certificate gives her birth year as 1858; which clearly would preclude his being her father, adoptive or otherwise. However, death certificate birth dates are sometimes the mistaken recollection of the person giving the information. The birth years of these children indicate they were not stepchildren at the time of Parker's & Mary's marriage, and adoption seems the most likely reason for their being cited as children of Parker and Mary.

    Children:
    1. Sarah Ann Adkins was born in 1851.
    2. Elizabeth Adkins was born on 20 Dec 1853 in Raleigh Co, VA; died before 18 Jan 1857 in VA.
    3. Elizabeth Adkins was born on 18 Jan 1857 in Lincoln Co, VA; died on 17 Jan 1945 in Hamlin, Lincoln Co, WV; was buried in Plumley Cemetery, Sias, Lincoln Co, WV.
    4. 2. Cumberland Adkins was born on 3 Jul 1859 in VA; died on 9 Mar 1921 in Lincoln Co, WV; was buried in Lucas-Adkins Cemetery, Wewanta, Lincoln Co, WV.

  1. 8.  Jacob Adkins was born in 1725 in Goochland Co, VA (son of William V. Adkins, Sr. and Elizabeth Parker); died in 1810 in Greenbrier Co, VA.

    Notes:

REFN: 1149, History of Summers County, By Judge James H Miller, Page 474

One of the oldest families of people in all this region of the New River Valley was that of Adkins or Atkins. They are said to have come into this region during the time of the Revolutionary War, and were first discovered living under cliffs on the Summers side of the river from New Richmond Falls, supposed to be the magnificent cliffs in the canyon at the mouth of Laurel Creek which empties into the New River half a mile from Lick Creek at New Richmond Post Office.

They were hunters and trappers in the earliest days, and have continued so as long as there was game in this region, and their descendants are scattered one place and another throughtout this region and other counties. Once in awhile you will find a member of the generation rising above the common level, but no great advancements have been made in this race.

There was a Parker Adkins, a man noted for his nose, the end of it being half the size of a man's fist; Riley Adkins, known as the "Chestnut Mountain Lawyer"; Leonard Adkins living in the Chestnut Mountain area; Albert Adkins, one of the most intelligent, lives near Hinton. Hen Adkins, one of the race, was drowned in Laurel Creek with L. M. Alderson's wedding suit on. Mr. Alderson was married twice and this was the suit he had purchased for his first marriage. He said that he sold a steer to secure the broadcloth suit.

Sometimes the name is spelled Atkins and sometimes Adkins.

The Gills are said to have come into the country about the same time and to have lived about the same way. The Gills and the Adkins have intermarried. There is an intelligent family by the name of Atkins, now residing in the Little Bluestone country of a different generation. A thriftless, harmless, indolent, unambitious race of people as a race, but without malicious cunning or dangerous, indigenous race are the Gills and Adkins.

Possibly the ancestors were Tories who emigrated into this then fastness to escape military service.

    Name:
(Adkins in this family also given as Atkins & Atkinson)

    Birth:
I've found no documentation of parents for William V. Adkins (Atkins, Atkinson). Long-standing information of his parents as John Thomas Adkins, Jr. and Elizabeth Bromwell (presented on this site and many others for many years) have contradicting evidence suggesting these were not his parents.

The William Atkins/Adkins born 28 March 1689, was born in Sandy, Bedfordshire, England and was buried there 9 September 1704, preceded by both his parents, who were also buried there (i.e.-not in Virginia).

From Family notes of Virginia Pierce: "Elizabeth Parker is the daughter
of Richard Parker and Mitha of England. She married 17 Jan 1716 William
Atkinson in the St. John's Episcopal Church in Richmond, Henrico Co.,
Virginia. The descendants of William Atkinson shortened the name to
    Adkins.
    From Adkins' Family History:
"Very little is known of Elizabeth as women were seldom mentioned in the
official records of the day. She was born ca 1695. This date is pretty
well locked up as she was married in 1716 making her in the range of 21
(an age about average for the time). Her children were born between the
nineteen yr. period between 1717 and 1735 (the hear of her child bearing
yrs). As mentioned above she was the daughter of Richard Parker who with
his family lived on the James River at the head of Four Mile Creek in
    Henrico Parrish. "
On Ancestor chart from Virginia Pierce, it lists Elizabeth's birth as
    1695,in Lawrence Co., Kentucky
Ancestral File has an entry that list Elizabeth's death place as
Goochland, Va. This entry also takes her line back several more
    generations.

    Church in Richmond.
