• Andrew's draft registration, dated September 12, 1918 and signed by him, shows him with a birth date of August 10, 1883. This document is personally signed by Grampa Andrew, spelling his last name ATKINS.
• The Family Bible of his brother, Oliver Balaam ATKINS, gives his birth date as 8 Aug 1883.
• Census records do not agree on his age (which is not unusual for census records).
• Family recollection of his children while living agreed he was born on August 10, 1884.

Nada (Adkins) Strickland (deceased oldest child of Mary Horton Adkins) gave her recollection of her mother's birth as being in Griffithsville, West Virginia; however also said she was born in Putnam County. Currently, Griffithsville is in Lincoln County, but many years ago might have been in Putnam or Cabell counties, as boundaries changed many times.

Wm. C. Millard's son's birth certificate lists him (Millard Sr.) as born in Elk River, WV; which is in Kanawha County and eastward, no part of which is in Cabell County. However, basically all of WV was originally Kanawha County. But if he was born in 1857, WV did not exist as a state until 1863.

Although Millard's death certificate gives his birth year as 1857, his son, Oliver Balaam's family Bible gives it as 1859.

William C. Millard Atkins went by Millard. He is said by his grandchildren to have had a nickname, "Bub", apparently after his grandfather, Robert Atkins. I've never heard why he has an additional middle initial "C".

One LDS record shows a specific marriage date of October 12, 1882, Kanawha Co, WV, and shows William's middle initial as H. It also shows Octavia as Octaby.

One record shows Lydia Woodrum as another wife of John Washington Egnor. Also she is shown as another wife of William Horton, husband of John Washington Egnor's daughter, Octavia Egnor; however, another John Washington Egnor is his son, Octavia's brother...a more probably match.

Carol Setliff's records show a Benjamin H. Plumley as born to Octavia and Plumley, but the H. seems to indicate he was son of Octavia and Horton, as there are three children listed with H. as middle name. Benjamin was listed as born May 1889; which conflicts with Willey H.'s birth year; however, Willey is also listed as born 1888. My personal records show a Balam Horton, which may be inaccurate or may be a nickname for Benjamin.

From various records found, the apparent order of marriages is 1)Smith, 2)Horton, 3)Plumley, 4)Saddler. Relatives of the time say there was an additional husband, Sutliff...order not known. She is said to be Indian...said to be full-blood Cherokee. For many years we did not know her given or surname. In late 2008, information surfaced showing her as Octavia Egnor, confirmed by several census records, etc.

Birth:
No record has been found for Octavia's birth as an Egnor or death with any last name ascribed to her spouses. Family lore has it that she was an Indian of Cherokee descent, but no further information was given. As she doesn't show in the 1860 census and then shows in the 1870 census as 14 years old, it is possible she was informally adopted into the family. Without U.S., VA/WV or Cherokee records showing this, it is not possible to determine.

If she was Cherokee, none of the ancestors shown here were actually hers...unless some of them were actually Cherokee.

Interestingly, her grandchildren through her daughter, Mary Frances Horton Atkins, never provided either a first or last name or a specific tribe for Octavia when asked, even though decades later it came to light that Mary's oldest daughter at least, did know her name and tribe. This would be congruent with her children instructing her grandchildren throughout their lives to not reveal this information to avoid persecution and possible relocation as an Indian.

Information previously unavailable: A granddaughter of Octavia whose mother grew up away from her siblings after her parents died in 1928 & 1931, said that DNA testing has been done by one of the granddaughter's siblings, and no Native American blood was indicated. Those grandchildren had also been told about being descended from Native Americans (as had the granddaughter's mother's siblings). If more information comes to light and is suitable for showing here, I will add it at that time.

Circumstantial evidence points to John Agner, Jr. and his wife Barbara being the parents of our Archibald Egnor!

Original findings concerning John Jr. are being re-examined. We now believe that the Johns in Rockbridge were confused and that John Jr. did go to Monroe County about 1823. Based on this and other circumstantial evidence, we are assuming that John Jr. is the father of Archibald and Elizabeth Egnor.

Doug Couch notes 2008: Also given as "? Egnor" in One Family Tree family records. Gould family records show father of Archibald as Egnor with wife Mary. Apparently, there are serious errors with this lineage. Where shown as John Agner, wife Barbara, daughter Mary is born when he is 11, and dies when he is 98, an unlikely but not impossible relationship. The above comment from the Aegender family records-notes, about the "Johns in Rockbridge" being confused, is unclear. To keep children groups, and people given as spouses organized, Barbara is shown with her children, and Mary (Polly?) is shown with hers. The claim that John Agner (Jr.) and Barbara are the parents of Archibald does not agree with the family linkage given in the same database where the comment was entered. Therefore, it is here "assumed" that there were two spouses, and that Mary and/or Polly is the mother of Archibald...until better documentation can be found.

Anna Meadows given in Mullins records as born 27 Feb 1806, unlikely spouse relationship and impossible son relationship. 1850 census shows Jeptha Massie, wife Anna and son William, with Anna's estimated birth year as 1788, a much more likely date, used here.

Anna's children are given differntly in different records. Thomas, Lahoma/Lany, William, and Jeptha are common to the various records (except one doesn't show Lahoma/Lany). Her other children's birth years, extend her child-bearing years beyond what one would expect, and children cited as by Jeptha Jr's second wife overlap those years. They are included here for reference, but many may not be her children. Similarly, other records looked at do not list a second wife. One of the oldest families of people in all this region of the New River Valley was that of Adkins or Atkins. They are said to have come into this region during the time of the Revolutionary War, and were first discovered living under cliffs on the Summers side of the river from New Richmond Falls, supposed to be the magnificent cliffs in the canyon at the mouth of Laurel Creek which empties into the New River half a mile from Lick Creek at New Richmond Post Office.

They were hunters and trappers in the earliest days, and have continued so as long as there was game in this region, and their descendants are scattered one place and another throughtout this region and other counties. Once in awhile you will find a member of the generation rising above the common level, but no great advancements have been made in this race.

There was a Parker Adkins, a man noted for his nose, the end of it being half the size of a man's fist; Riley Adkins, known as the "Chestnut Mountain Lawyer"; Leonard Adkins living in the Chestnut Mountain area; Albert Adkins, one of the most intelligent, lives near Hinton. Hen Adkins, one of the race, was drowned in Laurel Creek with L. M. Alderson's wedding suit on. Mr. Alderson was married twice and this was the suit he had purchased for his first marriage. He said that he sold a steer to secure the broadcloth suit.

Sometimes the name is spelled Atkins and sometimes Adkins.

The Gills are said to have come into the country about the same time and to have lived about the same way. The Gills and the Adkins have intermarried. There is an intelligent family by the name of Atkins, now residing in the Little Bluestone country of a different generation. A thriftless, harmless, indolent, unambitious race of people as a race, but without malicious cunning or dangerous, indigenous race are the Gills and Adkins.

Possibly the ancestors were Tories who emigrated into this then fastness to escape military service.

Rockbridge Heritage Book states on page 141: "Ludwig Agner is said to have had sons, John, Joseph, and George. It is probable his son John is the same John who came to Rockbridge County, Virginia. John Agner shows in Washington County, Maryland in 1790."

Is this the John listed as John Agnes in the 1820 Rockbridge County, VA census (page 278)?

In the 1830 Rockbridge County, VA census, a John Agnes Sr. is listed on page 285, but there is also a John Agner and a John Agner, Jr. listed on page 285.

The earliest Earls of Oxford (20) all lived too early to have been the father of a Jacob Harley married to Mary Adkins, except perhaps the last, Aubrey de Vere, the 20th Earl of Oxford, rather than the 3rd as often cited as Jacob's father. Records from peerage show both those Earls who succeeded to the position, and those who did not. The Earls of Oxford held the position from 1110-1703.

Also called Earl of Oxford, were the Earls of Oxford and Mortimer. The time period for these Earls is more compatible with the Jacob legend, holding the position from 1661-1853. Of these, the 3rd Earl, Edward, had three sons, Edward (4th Earl), John (father of Edward the 5th Earl), and Thomas (Mayor of London). None of these more contemporary Earls' cited descendants were named Jacob. This does not prove there was no Jacob son; however, it "may" indicate that such a son was illegitimate and not in line for the Earldom.

There were also the Earls of Oxford and Asquith from 1852 to the present day. These Earls were all born too late to have a son named Jacob married to Mary.

If Jacob was known to be a descendant or other relative of an Earl of Oxford, and thus lovingly called an Earl by his family, no connection has been shown. One or two authors of genealogy works have cited him as such, but unless someone produces the basis of such a citation, it has no value.

If there had been a Jacob, Earl of Oxford, or a Jacob in line to become Earl of Oxford, it is unlikely he would run off to North America and abandon such a vast wealth, and there are protocols and expectations involved. It is also unlikely that such a man would have a son, Jacob (Jr.), who would inherit all this wealth and then ignore it in favor of a trip across the Allegheny's, as is sometimes also part of the family legend. Whether a term of endearment or simply a wild family tale, there is little reason to accept it as a fact. If Jacob returned to England, where is the record of such a voyage, as there surely would be one?

Regarding suppositions of a common law marriage between Mary Adkins and either Jacob Harley or Jacob Oxford: Common Law Marriage has never been recognized in Virginia or West Virginia. Only in certain documented out of state common law marriages does West Virginia recognize certain rights along with certain previous out of state domicile and other requirements. (per some legal opinions given online)

It is not proven what the last name of Jacob was; some say it was Harley, others called him Jacob Oxford, but that was not his name.

From Family notes of Virginia Pierce, 290 Gardenia Dr. N, Salem, OR 97303, is listed:
"Mary Adkins is the mother of Jacob Adkins, who married Phoebe Bradshaw. There are several stories about the marriage of Mary Adkins and Jacob __________. We are not sure what his last name is. Some say it is Harley. However, it seems to be a fact that he was sent to America as a tax collector for the crown. They had seven children. Mary's brothers did not like him and fought with him. He was supposed to be the son of an English Earl - the Earl of Oxford. Some people called him Jacob Oxford, but that was not his name. When the Revolutionary War arose, he was called back to England and he did not take Mary and their children wit h him. He never returned to America. When he died he left some money for Mary and the children, but they would have had to go to England and present their claim for it, so they never received anything. Mary raised her family alone and they all turned out to be good people. The children all took their mother's name ADKINS."

"Mary death is calculated between 1814-20 in Cabell Co. She is buried in an unmarked grave on Beech Fork at the mouth of Bowen's Creek. She settled in land that was granted to her oldest son David for his service in the Revolutionary war. David himself settled in what is today Lawrence Co. "Mary Adkins is the mother of almost all Adkins descendants of Southwestern West Virginia. With most family researchers her descendants make up the so-called "Royal Line". This Royal Line theory comes from the family oral tradition that Mary lived common law with a descendant of the Earl of Oxford. According to the tradition, he deserted Mary and her children during the Revolutionary War and returned to England. Because the family name of the person that held the title 'Earl of Oxford' during the mid 1700s was Harley it was assumed by almost all researchers that this man's name was Jacob Harley. Our proven William Adkins (Adkinson) was said to have been born about 1690, which is about the same as March 28, 1689. Based on the above, we concluded that the William Adkinson, son of John and Elizabeth Bromwell, born on March 28, 1689, and William born about 1690, are the one and same person. 3. William Adkins, Jr., born c. 1721, in Henrico County, Virginia and died between 01-20-1784, and 03-15-1784. He married Lydia Owens, who was born c. 1724, in 1745,and died before 1782. Lydia Owens was the daughter of William and Lydia Lansford Owens.

4. Jacob Adkins, born c. 1725, in Henrico County, Virginia, and married Judah (unknown) Adkins.

5. Joseph Adkins, had four proven children,but the name of his wife is unknown. Based upon the birth date of Jacob andSherwood, Joseph was probably born around 1726 or 1727.

6. Sherwood (Sherrod), Adkins, born c. 1728, and married Sally (probably Lucas), around 1760, and lived at Clear Fork, of Wolf Creek, Virginia, that became West Virginia in 1863. Sherwood Adkins was the father of Isaac Adkins, Sr. Born c. 1780 and died on March 29, 1860, and Isaac married on may 6, 1804, to Elizabeth Hager, born c. 1780, in Baltimore, Maryland, daughter of Jacob and Sally Hager. Isaac Adkins, Sr. And Elizabeth Hager had a son named Isaac Adkins, Jr. Born in 1804, in Virginia, in accordance with the Carter County, Kentucky 1850 census.

1. John Adkins (supposed father of William Adkins) was married to Elizabeth Bromsall not Elizabeth Bromwell.
2. John and Elizabeth had a son William chr. 28 Mar 1689, Sandy, Bedfordshire, Eng. not Henrico Co. Va.
3. John Adkins, Elizabeth Bromsall Adkins and William Adkins their son all died in Sandy, Bedfordshire, Eng.

I've found no documentation of parents for William V. Adkins (Atkins, Atkinson). Long-standing information of his parents as John Thomas Adkins, Jr. and Elizabeth Bromwell (presented on this site and many others for many years) have contradicting evidence suggesting these were not his parents.

The William Atkins/Adkins born 28 March 1689, was born in Sandy, Bedfordshire, England and was buried there 9 September 1704, preceded by both his parents, who were also buried there (i.e.-not in Virginia).

"Very little is known of Elizabeth as women were seldom mentioned in the
official records of the day. She was born ca 1695. This date is pretty
well locked up as she was married in 1716 making her in the range of 21
(an age about average for the time). Her children were born between the
nineteen yr. period between 1717 and 1735 (the hear of her child bearing
yrs). As mentioned above she was the daughter of Richard Parker who with
his family lived on the James River at the head of Four Mile Creek in
Henrico Parrish. "
On Ancestor chart from Virginia Pierce, it lists Elizabeth's birth as
1695,in Lawrence Co., Kentucky
Ancestral File has an entry that list Elizabeth's death place as
Goochland, Va. This entry also takes her line back several more
generations.

There is a tax record for Ludwig Aigner on page 12 of the 1772 Northampton Co, PA (Williams Twp) tax list.

Mail from Sharon Agner notes that Ludwig had bought land in Washington County, MD, near Sharpsburg c.1773. Ludwig had died by 1791, no will had been found, an appraisal of the estate is dated 1791.

From the Revolutionary War:
There is a Henry and a John Eignor (of the Elizabethtown district that would later become Hagerstown, Frederick County, MD) and Benedict Eiginer (of Washington County, MD). Found in the MD State Archives in a book called "Revolutionary Patriots of Washington County, MD 1776-1883. It had:
