Note: Hiram L. COUCH learned the molder's trade and worked in a foundry. Then he joined the army and served in the Civil War in Co. K 3rd NY Infantry, enlisting in April 1861. Hiram was promoted to Captain on merit at Pawnee Landing, Folly Island, SC. On the 16th May 1864 he was shot badly in the arm and it was amputated. He was in hospital for 7 months or more and was eventually discharged due to ill health. He belonged to several local lodges. Hiram never married.
