On the 1890 Veteran Census he's living in Culberson, Boyd County and census notes say, "Gunshot in head and side of head." Obituary: "Capt. J. H. Sperry, one of the most prominent pioneer citizens of the county, died at his home near Palermo, Sunday (December 4, 1910), as the result of sudden stroke of paralasys. "Captain" Sperry was a man of great principle; honest, industrious and every ready to extend a helping hand to the unfortune and needy; a good neighbor, an excellent citizen and truly may it be said, the county has sustained a great loss - the people a sincere friend. Mr. Sperry was one of the great multitude of brave men who wore the blue through the Civil war and assisted in preserving the Union. We knew him as a man who always denounced wrong and upheld and praised the right, and having closed his earthly career at the age of 78 years, we feel that his race has been run well, and that God has said "Well done thou good and faithful servant," and has called him to enter into that never perishing home of the happiness." 17. | Laurie Jane Sperry (7.James3, 3.Thomas2, 1.Abijah1) was born on 6 Mar 1857 in Blaine, Lawrence Co, KY; died on 4 Jun 1938. Notes:
Birth:
In the 17-page record set where Laurie's birth is recorded on page 3, her brother Jacob is listed on page 13. People using this record have mistakenly given Jacob's birth year as 1857 because ancestry.com has erroneously labeled the entire page set as 1857. The county clerk signed off on page 6 however, in June 1858.

18. | Jacob W. Sperry (7.James3, 3.Thomas2, 1.Abijah1) was born on 31 Jan 1859 in Blaine, Lawrence Co, KY; died on 17 Mar 1930 in Boyd Co, KY; was buried on 19 Mar 1930 in Fannin Graveyard, Boyd Co, KY. Notes:
Birth:
Fact 1 - Jacob's death record gives his birth date as February 29, 1858.
Fact 2 - His birth year and age indicated in censuses is 1859.
Fact 3 - His birth record gives January 31 with no year indicated on the page.People transcribing from the 17-page set of records identified as 1857 have understandably believed that this January date was in 1857. However, "1857" appears only on the first six pages of that set. At the bottom of page 6, the county clerk signs off on the "foregoing", dated 29 June 1858. This must indicate that the "following" pages would be 1858 or later. Jacob's January birth listed after the clerk signing off would be in 1859. Apparently, Jacob believed he was born in February; however, this may have come from a record of a baptism or christening.
