Child, Sarah, was born in 1844 to Allen Adkins & Mahala Adkins, and in 1845, child, Alexander was born to Samuel Smith & Mahala Adkins. George Clarkson Smith, grandson of Samuel & Mahala, stated that Mahala was a widow when she married Samuel, placing Allen's death around 1844.

Jesse Adkins' parents are confirmed in his 1858 marriage record to Letha Adkins.

Jesse married Letha Rachel Adkins on 2 Feb 1858 in Mud River, Cabell Co, VA. Letha (daughter of Robert Adkins and Nancy Lilly) was born in May 1841 in New River, Fayette Co, VA. [Group Sheet]

It is not known by me who Almina married. She is listed as Elmira Adkins in the 1850 Cabell County Census. In the 1860 Cabell County Census, she is listed as Almina Hager and is living with Samuel and Mahala, along with an Emily Hager, which we would assume is her daughter. There is a Daniel Adkins on the 1880 Lincoln County census that is married to an Elmira and there is a child in the home named Wilbert. The census has him listed as an Adkins. Both Elmira and Wilbert Adkins are the correct age to be Elmira and Wilbert Hager.

Wm. C. Millard's son's birth certificate lists him (Millard Sr.) as born in Elk River, WV; which is in Kanawha County and eastward, no part of which is in Cabell County. However, basically all of WV was originally Kanawha County. But if he was born in 1857, WV did not exist as a state until 1863.

Although Millard's death certificate gives his birth year as 1857, his son, Oliver Balaam's family Bible gives it as 1859.

William C. Millard Atkins went by Millard. He is said by his grandchildren to have had a nickname, "Bub", apparently after his grandfather, Robert Atkins. I've never heard why he has an additional middle initial "C".

William married Mary Jane Richmond. Mary was born est 1861 in VA; died est 1892 in WV. [Group Sheet]

William married Polly Ann Lawson on Yes, date unknown. Polly was born est 1859 in Cabell Co, VA; died after 1921. [Group Sheet]

• Andrew's draft registration, dated September 12, 1918 and signed by him, shows him with a birth date of August 10, 1883. This document is personally signed by Grampa Andrew, spelling his last name ATKINS.
• The Family Bible of his brother, Oliver Balaam ATKINS, gives his birth date as 8 Aug 1883.
• Census records do not agree on his age (which is not unusual for census records).
• Family recollection of his children while living agreed he was born on August 10, 1884.

• Grampa Andrew's children spelled it both Atkins and Adkins, with some children spelling it one way part of their life, and the other way another part of their life.
         • An example is one son's entire family spells it Atkins, and yet when he gave the information for Grampa Andrew's death certificate, he gave it as Adkins.
• Grampa Andrew himself, spelled it Atkins like his father, William C. Millard "Bud" Atkins, had spelled it.
• Beyond Andrew's father, Millard Atkins (sometimes called "Bud"), Andrew was preceded by
   1. His grandfather was Jesse ADKINS
   2. His great grandfather was Allen ADKINS
   3. His great great grandfather was Thomas (Thomas Tindel "Tinsley") ADKINS
• In addition to this,
   1. His grandmother, Jesse's wife, Letha, had a maiden name of ADKINS
   2. His great grandmother, Allen's wife, Mahala, had a maiden name of ADKINS
   3. His great great grandmother, Thomas's wife, Susannah, had a maiden name of ADKINS
• Although there are other explanations, the family name Adkins derives from a naming custom where families would indicate the earliest male ancestor by using the first two letters of the ancestor's given name, and add "kin" to it, indicating they were his kin, generations later. Using this convention, Adkins (plural) are the kin of Adam.

Martha Alice Atkins/Adkins Ford - Birth Date Discrepancy

According to her death certificate (which apparently relied on her husband's recollection), Martha was born 28 Aug 1892. Her brother, Oliver Balaam, was born 9 Feb 1892 and her mother, Mary Jane Richmond Atkins (if indeed this was her mother) died 16 Feb 1892, as recorded in the family Bible of Martha's brother, Oliver. The truth of her birth may include any of the following:

1.) Her birth date was incorrectly remembered at some point in her life, and her husband had incorrect information...meaning that she was probably born in February, not August, and not on the 28th. So far, no Delayed Birth Certificate for her has surfaced, but very possibly it would also show an incorrect date. Although such misremembering was and is common, such incorrect date by itself cannot explain her absence in the census when her brother, Oliver, age 8, did show in the census.

2.) She had a different mother or perhaps was raised by relatives who had other girls in the family. In 1900, William C.M. Atkins shows no spouse in the census and Martha is not shown. Her death certificate lists her father as Bud Adkins and does not list her mother. William C.M. (Millard) Atkins, given as her father in some later accounts did go by Bud at times.

3.) She was not daughter to either of these parents.

Martha married Lemon Ford, Sr. in 1918. Lemon (son of J. Addison Ford and Sarah Gray) was born on 4 Jun 1885 in Nicholas Co, WV; died on 13 Aug 1977 in St. Albans, Jefferson District, Kanawha Co, WV; was buried in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, Kanawha Co, WV. [Group Sheet]
