Lived on the James River at the head of Four Mile Creek in Henrico Parrish. Richard is believed to have descended from the Parker family of Brownshome/shillingham, Yorkshire, England. Richard Parker's Will mentions wife Mitha (or Witha) (on the deeds giving property to his daughters his wife signed Elizabeth); daughter Ann, now wife of James Daniel; daughter Elizabeth, now wife of William Atkinson; daughter Mary now wife of Lewis Jinkins; and son Richard the executor.Thomas Owen and Robert Woodson, Jr. were witnesses. It was dated 27 Feb. 1726 and recorded 6 March 1726. Henry Pew, whose will was recorded in 3rd March 1711, mentioned grandson Joseph Adkins and was witnessed by John Adkins. I found in the Henrico Deed Books the Henry was 45 in 1679 and John was 17 in 1678. Henry Pew also mentioned a grandson Abraham Childers, Jr. In 1686 an Abe Childers (probably the senior Abraham) was 30 years of age. Also along these lines, Richard Parker "for love and affection" gave a cow calf to John Cannon and Esther his wife on April 1, 1689. This John Cannon was 43 in 1686 and his wife Esther was 22.
According to COLONIAL WILLS OF HENRICO CO. VA PART 1 1654-1737 pg 115 Richard Parker the first was married to a Mary or a Mitha. Their son Richard married a Judith in 1721. The first Richard died in March, 1726. He is also found him in Surry Co. VA records. His daughter Elizabeth married William Atkinson in 1716.

At the time of his marriage, Henry lived, along with the rest of his family, in the Pigg River area of Halifax (Pittsylvania 1767, Henry 1776, and Franklin, as today in 1785) County, Virginia. There are many records of Henry especially in Pittsylvania. These records (mostly land transactions) of Henry and Rachel clearly prove his relationship to his brother, Parker, and to their father, William Sr. One of the records that clearly proves his relationship is -- 15 Mar. 1773 Henry sold fifty acres to Samuel Calland (Pittsylvania deed book 4 pages 343-344). In this record, it is stated "...it being the land the said Henry now lives on which he bought of his brother, Parker, ... and boundaries will more fully appear by his deed he had from his father William Adkins, Sr." As Rachel and Henry were selling their land in the Pigg River area of Pittsylvania 1773 it is believed they were preparing to move to Fincastle (Montgomery1777, Giles 1806) County to join his brothers. It is known that Henry was in Montgomery in 1791 as he and Parker were granted exemptions from county taxes because of "age and infirmities".

REFN: 1149, History of Summers County, By Judge James H Miller, Page 474
One of the oldest families of people in all this region of the New River Valley was that of Adkins or Atkins. They are said to have come into this region during the time of the Revolutionary War, and were first discovered living under cliffs on the Summers side of the river from New Richmond Falls, supposed to be the magnificent cliffs in the canyon at the mouth of Laurel Creek which empties into the New River half a mile from Lick Creek at New Richmond Post Office.
They were hunters and trappers in the earliest days, and have continued so as long as there was game in this region, and their descendants are scattered one place and another throughtout this region and other counties. Once in awhile you will find a member of the generation rising above the common level, but no great advancements have been made in this race.
There was a Parker Adkins, a man noted for his nose, the end of it being half the size of a man's fist; Riley Adkins, known as the "Chestnut Mountain Lawyer"; Leonard Adkins living in the Chestnut Mountain area; Albert Adkins, one of the most intelligent, lives near Hinton. Hen Adkins, one of the race, was drowned in Laurel Creek with L. M. Alderson's wedding suit on. Mr. Alderson was married twice and this was the suit he had purchased for his first marriage. He said that he sold a steer to secure the broadcloth suit.
Sometimes the name is spelled Atkins and sometimes Adkins.
The Gills are said to have come into the country about the same time and to have lived about the same way. The Gills and the Adkins have intermarried. There is an intelligent family by the name of Atkins, now residing in the Little Bluestone country of a different generation. A thriftless, harmless, indolent, unambitious race of people as a race, but without malicious cunning or dangerous, indigenous race are the Gills and Adkins.
Possibly the ancestors were Tories who emigrated into this then fastness to escape military service.
