Gives the acceptable legal names of all four brothers. Shows that Bergondy was Peter M. Bergondy Lapice. it further shows that Ambrose G. was Ambrose Grenot Lapice, as first born son, having his grandmother's maiden name as his middle name.

  • Notes
    • Bergondy Lapice, the eldest son of Pierre Michel Ambroise Lapice, was born in Mississippi after his larger family arrived in the United States as a result of the Haitian Revolution. In a biographical sketch of Bergondy in "Biographical and historical memoirs of Louisiana..., v.1" held by Hathi Trust, pp.533-534, two things stand out as defining certain aspects of the family's history and standing.

"His [Bergondy's] father Pierre Michel La Pice de Bergondy, was born on the island of San Domingo in 1797, and was a descendant of a noble Normandy family to whom were granted lands by Louis XIV, of France."

"The grandfather [of Bergondy] was a large sugar and coffee planter of the island...".

Records about heirship related to reparations to former land and plantation owners and their heirs as one result of the Haitian Revolution show the Derouville, Grenot and Lapice families' heirship and interrelationships. Although the Haitians achieved independence, it came at the high, impoverishment-causing price of reparations levied by France under threat of continued war and re-enslavement. These three families and many others who went into exile were fortunate to escape St. Dominigue (Santo Domingo/Hispaniola) with their lives after their lands had been confiscated. These name and relationship records, on the web site domingino.de by Dr. Oliver Gliech, are encapsulated in the following two lists:

      1. "The Settlers of St.-Domingue—Names of Proprietors (1789)"

      2. "Other inhabitants of Santo Domingo 1750-1826—Heirs of former settlers"

Marie Jeanne Angelique Derouville Grenot [Great Grandmother of Bergondy, she was a settler of Santo Domingo and a source of her descendants' ownership and/or heirship] (Note: Rouville, France is in Normandy, not far from the port, Le Havre, where some emigrants embarked toward St. Domingue.)
Pierre Michel Lapice dit Bergondy [Grandfather of Bergondy and Son-in-law of Marie Grenot...married to her daughter, Rose Eleonore Elizabeth Grenot, was also a settler of Santo Domingo and a source of ownership and/or heirship through his marriage into the Derouville-Grenot family] Note: This Pierre was the last to hold the title, "de Bergondy".
——(Pierre Michel Ambroise Lapice (known as P.M. Lapice), the son of Pierre and Rose, was heir to the title, "de Bergondy", but never actually held it because the title became defunct during the French Revolution (and Haitian Revolution). He is not listed as heir.)
Rose Eleonore Elizabeth Grenot Lapice [Grandmother of Bergondy and daughter of Marie Grenot, was also a settler of Santo Domingo and a source of ownership and/or heirship, apparently owing to her mother]
——Listed as heirs but not as settlers are Rose's brother, Charles Bernard Grenot, her sister, Marie Jeanne Sophie Grenot and her brother, Pierre Ambroise Isidore Grenot. Marie Louise (Demie) Lapice, wife of Pierre Michel Ambroise Lapice is listed as heir. Also listed are Ann Marie Grenot and Anne Grenot (unclear at the moment who they were).
